Interview with Michael A. Sleavin of Divine Eve

DIVINE EVE have graced us with their brand of doomy death metal in a European style since the early days of 1993 when "As the Angels Weep" was released.

In 2010, they've returned, with a new EP named "Vengeful and Obstinate," and we were lucky to catch guitarist/vocalist Michael A. Sleavin for an interview.

He talks about the past, the twists and turns of DIVINE EVE's career, re-releases and the upcoming full length album.

Save KTRU (91.7 FM)

Rice University plans to sell its radio station KTRU (91.7 FM). This would remove a rare source of local, independent, non-corporate radio programming. Secret negotiations excluded input from Rice students and alumni. KTRU, which was created independently of the university by students with alumni funding, was never funded by Rice and is only "owned" by the university through a technicality. Help us oppose this sale by following the simple steps on this page:

Anti-racism is racism against those of one race.

Anti-racism is a non-solution. It tells us that if we just prohibit anyone from liking their heritage, we will leave in Utopian peace forevermore. That's a form of racism against people who have one line of heritage, such as Jews, Germans, Zulus, Swedes, Japanese, Koreans, Inca, etc.

Nihilism: Center for Nihilism and Nihilist Studies

I got curious about nihilism and went to find out more about it. The closest I can come to an "official" definition that's also credible (sorry, Wikipedia) is this:

Nihilism is the belief that all values are baseless and that nothing can be known or communicated. It is often associated with extreme pessimism and a radical skepticism that condemns existence. A true nihilist would believe in nothing, have no loyalties, and no purpose other than, perhaps, an impulse to destroy.

I found that to be a little extreme, since any philosophy that truly negates knowing anything has already negated itself, if it claims to know anything.

Then there was this, which seemed semi-apocalyptic:

Values and purpose are human inventions designed to be shared between us. Like language, values and purpose only work if we all know and agree on what they mean. They are easily manipulated by changing meaning without changing the symbol for it.

There was a more sensible definition elsewhere:

Nihilism is the perception that no inherent value exists.

Basically, it's a belief that there is no singular Cause or Truth in the universe, just our interpretations -- some of which are right, some of which are crap, in varying degrees.
